Classes continued their work with the 5 Themes of Geogaphy by focusing on Location. Classes competed in a cooperative game of battleship to learn latitude and longitude.

Students applied their geography skills to an authentic learning experience called Mysteryskype. Two of our classes spoke with schools in Vancouver, Canada, Mystic Middle School in Connecticut, and a group of teachers in Iowa.

Incrementally better or exponentially better?
"If you want to be incrementally better, be competitive. If you want to be exponentially better, be cooperative."
Classes began their first cooperative project by looking at what is better - cooperation or competition, and discussing where each of those works. We watched a video about how we can have both - Can cooperation exist in a competitive world? Yes! Here's the difference between the two:

Classes began to plan for their first #makered assignment. Groups must work together to plan, design, and create their own country based upon the Five Themes of Geography. There was much discussion and excitement as groups worked together.
Junk...
Students worked collaboratively to show their understanding of the Five Themes of Geography by creating their own nations out of junk.
Blogging
Mr. Evans, the Lead Teacher for Technology, joined us to explain what blogging is all about. We will be using blogging to reflect on our learning, share our ideas, motivate and inspire others and to connect with a world-wide audience.

Students had the opportunity to teach over twenty superintendents from Central Pennsylvania what a mysteryskype was all about. Our students were able to determine they were located in Annapolis, Maryland!

Beginning our studies on culture...
Students were asked how they would like to learn about culture. After defining it and discussing it, students were introduced to an expository writing piece based on what they were interested in - food! It became very clear throughout the lesson that expository writing is all about being specific and assuming that your audience knows nothing!
Students are working to create their own restaurant based on a culture they are interested in learning more about. Students will also be participating in the first ever cultural food festival based upon their own culture.
